Exploring the Hollows in Saint Martins

Beneath the waters of the Bay of Fundy lay sea caves carved by the Atlantic Ocean from the soft sandstone cliffs. You don’t have to go diving to explore these amazing hollows, you simply have to wait. Each day in a twelve hour cycle the tide goes out revealing the ocean floor and the beautiful caves at Saint Martins, New Brunswick. Six hours later the tide rolls back in, filling the voids, moving the rocks, and nourishing the sea weed that clings to giant boulders in the summer sun.

The tides in the Bay of Fundy are known to be the highest in the world, with a difference of 50 feet and six hours between high and low tides. Boats that once rested in the water now appear suspended in mid air as if lifted by the incoming fog. And though it is magical to the visitors eye, it is commonplace for the 300 residents who live in this beautiful part of Eastern Canada.

Nature with her creative hand has sculpted and carved, washed and hollowed, over thousands of years, this geological wonder, creating magical beauty that humans stand in awe of.

Nature’s creation had me thinking about the magnificent things we humans create and where we are headed with our creation of Artificial Intelligence and Algorithms. AI and Algorithms aren’t all bad, there is much good that can come from it, but there is also harm that can come from it, and some things we need to be watchful of. I broach this subject in my new video as I explore the Sea Cave hollows at Saint Martins New Brunswick. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Good to Know if You Go:

If you watched the video then you know that Saint Martins is where Craig and Irene Morrison lived. Their inspiring story was the subject of the movie Still Mine. I only realized it after seeing the scenery in the movie and then of course had to research their story. I’m so inspired by them!

Know your tide timings so you can plan your visit. There are two high tides and two low tides in a 24 hour cycle. https://www.tide-forecast.com/locations/Saint-Martins-New-Brunswick/tides/latest

Timed right you can walk the ocean floor while the tide is out, or if you prefer, kayak to explore some of the caves while the tide is in.

Though the village of St. Martins is small (notice the village is spelled as St. Martins, while the parish is spelled Saint Martins) there are plenty of places to stay, restaurants to eat at and tours to take, but plan ahead in the busy tourist season.

Approaching Saint Martins from Saint John you will find a wooden covered bridge in the village near the lighthouse. The second wooden bridge is currently being replaced (2022/2023) as it was in poor repair. You can see these in the video above.

The distance from Saint John NB to Saint Martins is 54 kms. So you can stay in Saint John and enjoy a day trip to Saint Martins.
