There’s something about Port Colborne that I really like. It has a quaintness to it that isn’t imbued in perfection. It’s rough edges similar to the coarse brown-sugar Lake Erie sand found on Nickel Beach. There’s something very human and personal about this little Niagara town and I have lots of happy memories of summer days spent here with my family on Nickel Beach.

Nickel Beach is a rare drive-on beach, and so it was an easy place to lounge with the trunk lid up so the kids could get at anything they were looking for. I’d pack all the necessary accoutrements for a full and fun beach day in the summer sun. The usual items like snacks, sand toys, umbrellas, towels and chairs. And I’d also bring along a folding table, a cutting board and kitchen knife with which to slice up a large watermelon. There was plenty of joy in watching my sand covered kids and sometimes their friends dripping in watermelon juice and Lake Erie water. Go ahead kids, make a mess. As I said, lots of happy memories were made on this beach.
That was a time when Nickel Beach was only known to Niagarans and rarely did we see anyone from out of the region. Things have changed since then and the beach is a lot busier since the pandemic, but still plenty of fun, though I didn’t go much last summer.

I have however been in the depth of winter to watch the ice formations on Lake Erie and of course, in Spring to enjoy the thaw. These times are full of delicious solitude. And draw me to The Port from time to time.

Just a few minutes away is the Port Promenade which is a fun place to walk along the Welland Canal or shop for some unique finds and enjoy a cafe. I found something really cute in the thrift shop there. You’ll see what it is in the video. Come explore Nickel Beach in Spring and the Port Promenade, in this silent video, no words, just calm music and the beauty of lovely Port Colborne.

What a beautiful beach, Alegria! I can just imagine all the fun you had there when your kids were young – the freshly cut watermelon and sand toys. And now – how interesting to visit in winter. Thank you for sharing this beautiful place and your memories with us! ❤

Thanks for letting us in on these beaches! I loved the video and your thrift finds. The apron reminds me of the handkerchiefs my grandmother embroidered for me when i was a kid. Such a treasure.

I know I love the embroidered apron so much. You’re right about the handkerchiefs. I had some and used to embroider some too. Lots to treasure. I was lucky to find such a treasure in perfect condition. Thanks for reading Margie.
