What are the 5 Rs you ask?, first let me tell you a bit of where this inspiration came from. In Niagara Falls you’ll find a famous tourist attraction, The Niagara Floral Clock. It is said to have been photographed as often as The Falls itself. I haven’t taken a picture every time I’ve been there, but I do have a few over the years. There’s even a picture of my parents in front of the clock almost half a century ago when they first came to this country.

Built in 1950, the floral clock includes 20,000 bedding plants that represent a different theme each year. This year the theme is renewal and resilience. And it got me thinking about the journey to joy, which includes both renewal and resilience.
So here are 5 Rs that will help you get to joy.
- Rest. This means taking a break, sitting with yourself in silence and coming to terms with your feelings. Yes, even and especially the bad ones.
- Reflect. Thinking about the emotions that surround our suffering will help us understand and create a plan to overcome it.
- Release. Create something out of those feelings. Write, paint, create music… There are many ways to express ourselves. Be yourself and let it out. Haven’t some of the world’s most famous creations come from someone who has suffered and felt the need to express it?
- Renew. As you release you find renewal. New thoughts and feelings take over as you approach recovery.
- Recover. There is something magical in this phase. A new light shines. You will look back on your courage to accept pain as a part of life and grow from it. And you realize that moving through your pain and suffering has brought a new way of thinking that invokes peace and joy.
Beyond that you will be filled with a great sense of gratitude. As the wheel begins to turn, slowly at first like the hands of this beautiful clock, you know the entire universe conspires with you. Suddenly it feels like everything fits together in perfect synchronicity and everything happens in perfect timing, just like this clock.
This weekend I finished reading a book from an author who exceptionally exemplifies renewal and resilience. I’ll share all about that in my next post. You don’t want to miss it.
In the meantime, share your thoughts on renewal and resilience. Do you have an example or story that you can share to inspire others.
This is the Journey to Joy series. Write a post, like a gratitude journal about something you’ve experienced on this journey to joy. Ping back or link your post in comments, and I’ll share it in my next Journey to Joy post. Let’s share the joy in this journey!
If You Go:
The Niagara Floral Clock does have free parking, though the WeGo buses stop there. It is on the Niagara River Parkway about 8 kms from the falls and almost next door to the Botanical Gardens. If you are travelling along the parkway from The Falls head towards Niagara-on-the-Lake, you can’t miss it.

I have so many happy memories of trips to the Falls over the years. And, of course, visiting the clock. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Alegria. I love your thoughts on the five Rs. Rest is a big one I’ve been working on. I have tended to skimp on sleep, but life is remarkably smoother when you get enough of it. 🙂 Who knew? Lol

The Floral Clock is an icon, as you know Susan. So glad this evoked some happy memories for you.
And yes, rest is so important. We take it for granted often, but it is so needed for us to maintain our physical and emotional balance.
Thanks for reading. 💕

First of all, what a great idea, that clock is beautiful! I do remember a flower garden of sorts the last time I visited (years ago) I wonder if that was it and I totally missed it 😊. I love those 5 R’s and I’m in the process of getting very familiar with them and plan on making them my best friends 💕!

It may have been. There are lots of spectacular gardens and plantings around Niagara Falls. They do an incredible job every year. Can’t even imagine the amount of work. And to keep it looking pristine. Amazing! And so glad you’re getting familiar with the 5Rs. Besties yeh!
Thanks for reading and appreciating Jan! 💕

What incredible pictures, Alegria! I love your sentence, “And it got me thinking about the journey to joy, which includes both renewal and resilience.”
That hit me between the eyes. Love your five R’s and how they help us to regulate life’s pressures and bring back joy. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful post!!

Thanks so much for appreciating Wynne. It’s all part of our journey to joy isn’t it. Joy doesn’t come bursting in irreverently. It is a process. A journey we must take. One of endurance and resilience. And wow, when it comes it’s really something. Thanks so much for reading and sharing your lovely thoughts. 💕

Thank you. I love learning more about Canada. And I love civic projects like this Floral Clock. How wonderful. And the five ‘r’s are good advice.

Thanks for reading and appreciating Michelle. The floral clock is definitely an iconic structure in Niagara Falls. There are several, including of course, the falls themselves. Hope you’re doing great and having a good summer.

Gorgeous! It was a million years ago (okay, maybe 1973?) when I was last near Niagara Falls and I don’t remember this stunner of a landmark. Whoa! I love it…and the fact that you’ve got a photo of your parents standing in front of it at a pivotal time in their lives? Whoa and wow!
Here’s to the 5 R’s you’ve given us. I appreciate each, but #5 really resonates. I hadn’t thought about this – how a “new light shines” when we know we’re right where we’re supposed to be for recovery. You’re so right! A literal light…beacons of all sorts (if we’re aware and ready) and a lightness of being that is oh-so precious when restoration is needed. Thank you so much! 💕💕💕

What a beautiful and thoughtful message Vicki. Of course it’s no surprise coming from you. And I love your thought about restoration. It’s such an important part of recovery isn’t it. Perhaps a 6th R. Thanks my friend for your insightful words! 💕🥰
