What if I told you of a place where you could learn anything, be anything, and become anything. You can dream, imagine, and grow, in silence, on your own. There is a such a place. It’s real. And it’s all in there.
Can you guess what this place is? It’s a bookshop, a library, a bookshelf in your house.
Some libraries in famous universities or large cities are magnificent. The walls lined with books on solid wooden structures ornamented with rich carvings, reach heavenward with sliding ladders. Stained glass windows let in just enough light, while single pendant lights highlight the written words for the silent reader. And on every categorized shelf, books that can enlighten and shift a world.
I have been in many, many libraries and bookstores and have loved every one. From large gothic structures to the local bookshop in seeming disarray.
I had driven by The Alphabet Bookshop in Port Colborne several times, always wanting to wander in, and never did. But on this particular day, I finally did!
The shop is in an old Victorian house. Peeling paint on the porch railing adds to its charm. There a bookstand sits with a handwritten sign, while the storm door sits propped open in invitation.
I open the painted wooden door to enter this world of wonder, and I’m not disappointed. There are books everywhere. From floor to pressed tin ceiling. Neatly categorized on shelves and stacked on the floor and tables. What a wonder!
Amongst the books there are other historical items, old photographs, vintage greeting cards, little tins and collectibles from a bygone era.
And inside, between these brick walls there is so much knowledge and a world of wonder and imagination.
Libraries and bookshops are loved for the books of course, but they are also a place where you can go slow, wander and ponder. Where quiet and silence are appreciated. I’ve spent plenty of time in such places with my children. And have sought out these spaces on my own as well.
As a young student I spent a fair bit of my life in libraries. The world was opening up to me through books. And I often thought about how one turn of the page can change your life, by changing your perspective and altering your mindset.
Along with the words, there’s also the joy of a book in your hand. The smooth feel of a page, the sound of its turning, the scent of paper and print.
Books are a sensory experience. And can also be an illusory experience. Full of joy and wonder. Wisdom and inspiration. Imagination and delight. They hold power and purpose. Knowledge and curiosity. Depth and dissolution. Stories and yearnings. It’s all in there.
I have begun to write one. It will take a long time between research and writing, but the journey has begun. And there’s joy in that journey too.
I know some of you have written books. Share yours in the comments below for everyone to see. You never know whose world you’ll shape and whose life will change with your words.
If you haven’t written a book, yet! Have you ever wanted too? I do think we all have at least one book in us. What do you think?
This past week, Mel from Lifeonebigadventure.com wrote about State Library Victoria in Melbourne. A fascinating place for its architecture, ambiance and of course books. The Alphabet Bookshop sounds like a treasure! I would really love to visit that one. Books that I read in childhood heavily shaped my future. I naturally gravitated to good writing, to literature rather than pulp. I do believe they created the traveler in me! My first part-time (paid) job as a teenager was in a library. It was a dream job for someone who loved to read as much as I did! Books have played a profound role in my life, and they still do.

Oh it’s such a treasure! I’d driven by many times wanting to go in. On this particular day the timing was just right! I too love books. And there are certain books that stand out for me from my younger years, all classics. Some of which I’ve re-read as an adult. And then yes, those books that are based in far off places have stirred the imagination and the traveller in me too. I completely relate.
Thank you for sharing your lovely comment. 💕

You asked us (in the Easter post) how we might find joy on Easter Sunday. Catching up on reading a few back posts on your site on Easter definitely contributed to that for me. So thank you for sharing your joyful vision of life, Alegria. I really wish I were there to meet you and visit in person. Some day! Until then, I will keep connecting to you here (and in letters).

That’s such a lovely thing to say Susan! You must come. It would be so good to meet and enjoy our beautiful home town together. Write it down on your To Do list and make it happen. Just like Italy. Until then, yes, we’ll keep writing. 💕

I love this post. You’ve captured perfectly the allure of bookshops and libraries, or even just a bookshelf. This old bookstore seems perfect, lots of unique character no doubt adds to the experience.
Enjoy the journey of your book writing. I’ve started playing around with an idea. Potentially a book, but like you I plan to enjoy the journey and see where it takes me. I’ll learn a lot through the process, whether or not it produces a book

That’s half the fun isn’t it, just going through the process and enjoying it. And yes, it’s a captivating place. I’d driven by it several times before and then finally made a plan to stop in. So glad I’d did.
Thanks for reading and offering your supportive words Brenda. I wish you joy in your journey too. 💕

Thank you Wynne. That’s so kind and encouraging, when I’m plagued by occasional self-doubt. It may be years before anything comes of it, but my plan is to enjoy the journey. 🤗 💕

Enjoy the journey indeed! And I will quote a fortune cookie that I got right before I had my second child, “If your dreams done scare you, they aren’t big enough!” In that light, self-doubt seems like an indicator you are doing exactly the right thing!

Ah that’s beautiful Wynne. I’m generally not one to doubt myself, and I’m generally fine outside my comfort zone, yet this thing has me wondering. I love that quote. I’m going to remember your supportive words. Thank you for sharing and your encouragement. 💕

I love your phrase about a bookshop SEEMING to be in disarray. Oh my, yes. That’s part of the invitation to grow and step into the glow…not too tidy, inviting a little spelunking and discovery. A little musty and mysterious. And your descriptions of the vintage details – buildings that have witnessed the world and still stand strong, welcoming readers. Adventurers. Please keep writing. I’ll be ready and waiting to soak up your book. xo! 🥰
