The cacti in my garden is blooming, bright and yellow on thorny flat green stems that look like a beaver’s tail. The cacti has spread further into the garden bed and when I asked a neighbour if she wanted some she said, “oh no, cactus is too ugly and has too many thorns.” What do you see when you see a cactus? Do you see the thorns or the flowers? Ugliness or beauty?
Yes, this variety of cactus has many sharp spines and blooms for only a short time in the summer, but when it blooms wow! It is a metaphor for life.

Cacti grow in some of the harshest conditions on our planet – without much water, in extremely hot conditions during the day, that shift quickly to cool when the sun sets. Cacti are mostly unloved, but those who love them love them completely. Yes, you have to manage them gently and with thick gloves, but their needles are purposeful. The spines are protective to vulnerabilities that may spell their demise if they didn’t have them, and keep them strong. They have deep roots and find their own equilibrium in order to navigate extreme conditions. And, they grow, offering interest to a stark landscape and sustenance for desert animals.

Be like a cactus, have lots of spine, find your own balance, and once in a while bloom. Bring your joy to the surface and share it with the world.
Who wants some cactus? And who wants to be like some? 🙂

I love all plants, including the thorny ones, and whether they are flowering are not. Cacti are very unique. Those yellow flowers are gorgeous!

We have those yellow blooms and some flaming orange ones around our shorelines, Alegria. I don’t see how anyone could think them ugly. I’m quite a prickly person too but, just occasionally, I have a beautiful heart.

Hahaha there’s nothing wrong with being a little prickly now and then Jo. It helps us survive, just like the cactus. And oh yes, I see your beautiful heart. How lovely that you have blooming ones there. Must be a lovely sight. 🌵

I love cacti – I have lots of false Christmas cacti in the house. This is my first year trying one outside. I’m trying because of climate change. My local weather has shifted over the past ten years and I think the cactus will now do well.

That’s great Michelle. The cacti in my garden does really well. And as you know we can have some rough winters here. There are so many varieties of cacti and they work in many climates. Do yours bloom each year?

Inside, yes. We’ll see how it does out in the wild as a free range cactus. But what I’ve discovered about plants is they’re hardier than I usually think. They want to live.

Thanks very much Jez. They are a lovely surprise each summer. I wasn’t aware that this variety bloomed until one summer years ago, they bloomed, creating a lovely garden surprise. And they do every year.
Thanks for your visit. 🌸

Thanks Cee! They are really beautiful. It has been hot lately though it hasn’t been super dry here, but some varieties do well in my zone.
