Joy is that emotion defined by the Oxford dictionary as “a feeling of great pleasure and happiness.” But it is so much more than that. While happiness is something that everyone pursues fervently, joy is that feeling of contentment that is permanently coupled with peace. You can’t have one without the other, but you can find both in the in-between. And joy brings happiness.
Between the rising of the sun and the setting of it there is a whole world in motion that sits on the periphery of our observations. When we slow down we notice these little things, the minute changes that may seem redundant, or those we may take for granted due to the pace at which we think we must live. But there are joyful moments all around us everyday if we just stop to look.
We often look for joy in the big things, like falling in love, the birth of children and grandchildren, celebrations, achievements, overcoming challenges, reunions and great trips afar. All those are great joys that are few and far between. Yet everyday between sunrise and sunset we get a chance to experience the little joys. Those simple little joys make life more meaningful regardless of our circumstance. At least that is how it works for me.
How about you? What is a little thing that you noticed today that brings you joy?
Watch this short video and experience two minutes of some of the little joyful things I noticed in the in-between.
The music in that video was enchanting. The image at the end – setting sun and the tree branch – was so perfect.
You’re right – the big happy moments don’t happen often enough but the little joys are everywhere. I felt more energized today than I had this past week, which made me happy.

Very true words! There is so much around us to be grateful for or take delight in and we’re often so busy we fail to notice it. It’s those little things in each passing moment, the in-between as you say. Thanks for the helpful reminder!

There’s a little bird hopping about on the patio at present. He’s just living. Pecking. Doing what birds do. The little things. Wishing you a joyful summer!

Gorgeous video that makes your point in ways words rarely can. For me, it has been the enjoyment I find in photography that has helped me slow down and see all of the wonder each day brings in the normal activities of nature. Excellent post; thank you!

Thanks, I am, but am waiting for reliable internet (next week, I hope) before posting again. All’s well and I’m taking tons of photos of the new-to-me local flora!

That’s wonderful. I will look forward to hearing and seeing more of your adventures. That was quite a move, and in a pandemic with the boys in tow. Wow. 👏 👏 👏

It’s a process for me too, but the older I get the better I am at it. The fun is in the practice. 😄 Thanks for reading!
