Writing with Ink and Intuition

There are three types of writers says Author, Elif Shafak.

Plot-driven writers plan the story, focus on the structural architecture and map out the mechanics.

Character-driven writers place greater emphasis on human psychology and character development allowing the story to flow from the flaws and motivations of the individuals.

Language-driven writers write prose that reads like poetry. They are guided by language and rhythm rather than strict structural engineering. They take the intuitive path, allowing the text to be developed by the characters themselves.

Elif Shafak is one of these. No wonder she is one of my favourite authors, and I too naturally gravitate to this type of writing. I’ll write more about Ms. Shafak and her recently released (UK) book, In One Brief Moment All Eternity, which is making its way to me across The Atlantic. I can’t wait to read it.

In an interview with David Perell on his podcast, How I Write, Elif Shafak said this, “But I love writing with intuition as my guide. Of course, you do a lot of thinking and research; the research process is immense, almost insane. But there comes a moment when you feel like you can take off, you can fly. From that moment onwards, I don’t truly know what I’m doing, but I trust my intuition. I like it when my characters surprise me. As you said, nearing the end, when all these pieces start to come together, it’s almost spiritual. Something very mystical happens, and you’re not necessarily controlling it. There is a flow that you have to respect.”
