Have you heard of a new trend going around on social media? It includes writing a poem to your younger self. Some choose to write prose. The trend began with Jennae Cecelia writing a poem to her younger self that begins with, I met my younger self for Coffee. She posted it on Instagram and it has become a viral sensation.
Though I enjoy some trends, I don’t always jump on the bandwagon. This however, I couldn’t help but partake in. It is thought provoking and cathartic. Will you try it too?
Here’s my take:

I met my younger self for coffee, but we both ordered tea
We seem to choose the path less travelled, that’s our philosophy
Her hair was big, her earrings bigger the 80s called it seems
She was vivacious and full of life and she talked about her dreams
We commiserated as we poured and laughed about the changes
I couldn’t tell her of all the things, that life rearranges

She’d know trauma, loss and tragedy
making people wonder
how can this skinny girl stand on two legs
when she should be six feet under
What I did say was that she’d overcome
she would be fine and more
“You have the courage of a lion
with wings to make you soar.”

She was so grateful for the pep talk
then I sent her on her way
she waved and blew me kisses
and then came back to say
“Thank you for living my dreams
for making them come true
I know it wasn’t easy
and I’m so proud of you.”

“I know that you’re not done yet
but whatever it is you do
Do it for the both of us
and especially for you.”

At this stage you would think
that we’d part company
I’m sorry, but you’re very wrong
we’re still together drinking tea
because that skinny girl is me
I’m just a bit fatter
Took all these pics recently while enjoying Afternoon Tea at The Prince of Wales Hotel here in Niagara. You can see more about this gorgeous place from a previous visit here https://lifewithalegria.com/2023/03/17/afternoon-tea-at-the-prince-of-wales-hotel-a-place-for-friends/
So tell me, will you join in on the I Met My Younger Self for Coffee trend? If you do please let me know, I’d love to read your poem or prose.
Happy writing!

This is a beautiful and moving poem! It’s so well-written and captures the feeling of looking back on your younger self with both love and understanding. I especially love the lines about “the courage of a lion with wings to make you soar” and “Thank you for living my dreams.” It’s clear that you have a lot of love and respect for your younger self, and that you’re proud of all that you’ve accomplished.
I also really appreciate the way you incorporated the tea theme into the poem. It’s a nice touch that adds to the overall atmosphere. And the photos of the Prince of Wales Hotel are stunning! It looks like a perfect place for afternoon tea.
Thank you for sharing your poem with me. It’s truly inspiring, and it makes me want to try writing one of my own.

Thank you for your beautiful message. It is very much appreciated. I do enjoy afternoon tea at the Prince of Wales. It’s a gorgeous tea room that feels really lush. Very warm and inviting on a wintery day.
I do hope you’ll try this poetic self-reflection. I enjoyed the process very much. If you do, and want to share it, let me know. I’d love to read.
Thanks so much for being here and appreciating my words.

Your exams are important, so good on you for managing your priorities so well. How wonderful that you are a poet at your age. I used to write a lot of poetry when I was young like you. Keep going!

I would have loved to have some conversations with my younger self. Experience is certainly one of life’s best teachers.

Oh, I love this, Alegria! Especially, “You have the courage of a lion
with wings to make you soar.”
We all need this pep talk now and again, don’t we?
Funny that this is a trend. I didn’t know. About a month ago, I wrote some dialogue between me and my 40-year-old self for reflection. It was cathartic!

Oh that’s so great you did that Wynne. I think I missed it, if you posted it. Mind sharing a link if you did? I’d love to read. Definitely cathartic moments that also allow us to look back and appreciate our own growth.
Thanks for appreciating my friend. Hope you’re having a fabulous Sunday! 💕

So beautiful…and timely. I love it – especially this:
“I couldn’t tell her of all the things, that life rearranges…” Wowza.
Coincidentally…I wrote a new poem recently as a result of conversation with a client. I don’t know if it exactly fits this theme, but I’ll share it next week. I like the synchronicity of leaning into poetry with you and I hadn’t heard of this movement. Thank you, Alegria! 💕💕💕

Oh do share Vicki! I’d love to read. I’ve been getting back to writing more poetry again and enjoying it very much. Then I was tagged on Instagram to create my own version and am passing it onward. It’s fun, introspective and cathartic in some ways too. I enjoyed the process of thinking of my younger self. 💕🌸
