Have you ever skipped stones? A lazy day spent by the lake tossing stones and watching them skip on the surface of the water is a summer dream. It takes practice and many summers to perfect the skill. And though I’m not very good at it, I tried my hand at it in the Stone Skipping Capital of Canada, Big Bay Ontario, where the stones are flat and perfect for skipping.

This tiny little community along the shores of Georgian Bay, which is the northeastern arm of Lake Huron in Grey County is probably home to only a few hundred residents. The quiet and calm of the place is a joyful experience, and I’m so glad we chanced upon this natural beauty, with time to explore it a bit on our road trip along the shores of the Great Lake Huron.
It is a picturesque stop along Highway 1 that hugs the north shoreline before coming south towards Wiarton or heading north to Tobermory, the northern end of the Niagara Escarpment.

There isn’t a whole lot to say about this place and that is what makes is special. With only two other humans and one dog in sight, it was a great place to stop and stick our toes into the pristine waters of Lake Huron. And to skip a few stones.
Here’s a little video that will give you a feel for this beautiful place.
Have you ever skipped stones? I can say I’ve done it in the Stone Skipping Capital of Canada. Though if you saw me in action I’m not sure if you’d actually call it skipping, even though the flat stones were perfect for it.
As a kid we always skipped stones on the ocean and tried to compete with each other.

Three hops is usually my max for stone skipping, although I spent hours trying on Minnesota lakes. : )

Three is better than none, which seems to be my average record. Isn’t stone skipping such a fun languid activity that reminds us of summer days. Sounds like you’ve got some great memories Rebecca. Love it!

Those stones look perfect, though mine tend to do a belly flop.

Haha yes mine too Jo. But the ammunition for doing a perfect skip was plentiful and my hubby is a pro.
