Teatime in Niagara: Flash Fiction

Ella brewed the tea, while fitfully searching for her tea strainer.  The grey day fit her mood.  Her hand stirred the sugar cube in the delicate cup unceasingly, as she stared beyond the dingy kitchen window with its creamy lace curtain that was once white.  She dreamt of sunnier days, of Niagara vineyards laden with fruit, of peach trees, and deep red barns that punctuated the green landscape.

And as she stirred, scraping the china with her silver spoon, his hand covered hers, willing her to stop.  Maxx was here.  She took a deep breath and turned to face him.
